Built beginning in 1870 for businessman and former Binghamton mayor Sherman D. Phelps, the mansion is associated with reports of period-dressed apparitions, unexplained footsteps, moving objects and a clock chiming without being wound. Pine Hill Cemetery is widely nicknamed Blood Cemetery because of the Blood family buried there, especially Abel Blood and a gravestone whose carved hand helped fuel local legends. Local legend says Zella Droff was murdered after secretly attending dances at the former Pitcher Hotel, then returned years later as a ghost who accepted a ride from an unsuspecting salesman. A Legends & Lore marker on Pitcher Hill Road marks the area associated with the story.
West Greenwich, RI
Nellie Vaughn died in 1889, but her grave later became surrounded by stories describing her as a witch, vampire or restless ghost. Investigations of the legend show that many of the supernatural claims appeared long after her death, making the site as much a lesson in how folklore evolves as a haunted stop. The former Poasttown Elementary School has been converted into a dedicated paranormal investigation destination rather than demolished or repurposed as a conventional museum. Point Lookout held tens of thousands of Confederate prisoners during the Civil War, with thousands dying from disease and harsh conditions before the camp closed in 1865.
