The former Carbon County Jail opened in 1871 and is infamous for the executions of men accused of belonging to the Molly Maguires. Cell 17 contains a dark handprint that local lore says repeatedly returned after attempts to remove it, and visitors can see it on seasonal guided tours of the jail.

Built in 1840 and retired as the area's primary light in 1871, this small Lake Huron lighthouse now operates as a township park and museum. Originally built as a church in 1772, the stone structure was fortified during the Revolutionary War and attacked in 1780. The grand 1902 Mount Washington Hotel is associated with stories of Carolyn Stickney, whose apparition is said to appear in Victorian clothing and who is often nicknamed "the Princess." Perched above Penobscot Bay, Owls Head Light combines dramatic coastal scenery with a collection of long-running ghost and maritime legends. Stories associated with the site include unexplained footsteps and apparitions as well as tales of the lighthouse keeper’s dog Spot, who famously rang a bell to warn passing vessels. Paranormal claims remain folklore.
New Shoreham, RI
This historic Block Island cemetery is traditionally associated with survivors and victims connected to the 1738 wreck of the Princess Augusta, remembered in folklore as the Palatine. The disaster later inspired stories of the Palatine Light, a flaming ghost ship said to appear offshore around the anniversary season. One of Maine’s most recognizable lighthouses also carries a local ghost tradition involving the apparition of a woman sometimes described as wearing a red shawl. The tower and surrounding rocky point are real public attractions; the haunting is regional folklore rather than a verified event.
Fairfield, CT
This isolated lighthouse stands more than a mile offshore on a dangerous reef. Its best-known legend concerns keeper Frederick Jordan, who drowned in 1916 and was later said to return as a protective ghost. There is no casual public walk-up access; view it from shore or by boat.
Spring City, PA
Pennhurst State School became nationally important after its abusive conditions were exposed and legal challenges helped push the disability-rights movement forward. Parts of the surviving campus now offer scheduled daytime history tours and museum interpretation alongside photography, paranormal and seasonal haunted-attraction experiences, so travelers need tickets for a specific event rather than wandering the property.
