The former Carbon County Jail opened in 1871 and is infamous for the executions of men accused of belonging to the Molly Maguires. Cell 17 contains a dark handprint that local lore says repeatedly returned after attempts to remove it, and visitors can see it on seasonal guided tours of the jail.
