Danbury, CT
Danbury became the center of national attention during the 1981 murder trial of Arne Cheyenne Johnson, whose defense attempted to argue that demonic possession played a role in the killing. The court rejected possession as a legal defense, but the case became one of Connecticut's most famous intersections of true crime and paranormal belief.
Galena, IL
Illinois' oldest operating hotel hosted Abraham Lincoln and Ulysses S. Grant and carries a substantial body of guest and staff ghost lore.
Clare, MI
The Doherty Hotel has operated since the 1920s and has a documented Prohibition-era history that includes the 1938 killing of Isaiah Leebove, a lawyer and businessman associated with Detroit underworld figures. The active hotel also carries longstanding ghost stories involving Leebove and members of the Doherty family, though those paranormal claims remain anecdotal.
Mesilla, NM
The historic adobe property is associated with a long-running local legend about two young lovers killed there and later reported as apparitions. It is an operating restaurant, so OddWay should present the story as lore and respect normal business access.
Tuscaloosa, AL
This distinctive Greek Revival and Italianate mansion is tied to long-running local stories of phantom lights and unexplained activity, often connected to the deaths of Dr. John Drish and his wife Sarah. It operates as a private event venue, so interior access requires permission or a scheduled event.
Lynn, MA
Spiritualist Hiram Marble spent decades tunneling into a rock formation because he believed the ghost of pirate Thomas Veale was directing him toward buried treasure. Marble and his son died without finding it, but their narrow 135-foot excavation still exists in Lynn Woods and opens on a limited schedule.
Dunkirk, NY
The Dunkirk light station dates to 1827, with the present Victorian keeper's house and tower preserving maritime and military history along Lake Erie. Reports include footsteps, voices, humming and unexplained touches inside the keeper's house and tower; the site operates as a museum and also schedules paranormal investigations.
Memphis, TN
A former pharmacy and later nightclub became a beloved dive bar with layers of Memphis music, vice and ghost lore. Stories of unexplained jukebox behavior and apparitions are part of its reputation, but the building is best experienced as an operating business with documented history.
Philadelphia, PA
Eastern State Penitentiary is a preserved 19th-century prison where visitors can explore cell blocks, prison yards and exhibits about incarceration, including Al Capone's restored cell. The historic site operates as a museum, while separate Halloween programming adds large-scale haunted attractions during the fall.
Scotch Grove, IA
This former Jones County poor farm and later care facility is now operated specifically for tours and paranormal investigations. Its institutional history, isolated setting and preserved interior have made it one of Iowa's best-known ghost-hunting locations.
Stowe, VT
The 1844 Gold Brook covered bridge is better known as Emily's Bridge because of a local ghost story about a young woman who supposedly died there after being abandoned by her lover. Tales of scratches, voices and other activity are folklore rather than established history, but the bridge remains one of Vermont's best-known haunted landmarks.
Cape May, NJ
This 1879 Victorian mansion is preserved as a house museum filled with period architecture and furnishings. Cape May MAC also incorporates the estate into ghost-themed programming built around local reports and legends associated with the property.
Marthasville, MO
This historic property is operated as a dedicated paranormal investigation venue with overnight and scheduled access. The site gives OddWay a legitimate routeable haunted-location stop without encouraging entry into an abandoned or unauthorized structure.
Syracuse, NY
The museum occupies Syracuse's 1850 Weighlock Building, the only surviving canal weighlock structure of its kind. Stories associated with the building include apparitions, footsteps and voices, while visitors can normally explore the canal exhibits during regular museum hours.
Derry Township, PA
Estate of Evil is a haunted-house experience inside Hersheypark Dark Nights, taking visitors through a sinister mansion filled with themed rooms and live scares. It is part of the amusement park's fall event rather than a separate attraction, so access requires the appropriate Hersheypark/Dark Nights admission.
Jefferson, TX
A long-running historic hotel associated with Jefferson ghost stories, including tales involving famous guests and unexplained events.
Gordonsville, VA
The Exchange Hotel became a receiving hospital during the Civil War and treated tens of thousands of sick and wounded soldiers before later serving other purposes. Today it operates as a museum with medical and wartime displays, while reported apparitions, voices and unexplained activity have made it a frequent paranormal destination.
Lancaster, OH
The former Fairfield County Infirmary is a large institutional building associated with generations of poor-farm and county-home residents. It now operates as a paranormal and historical venue offering scheduled tours, photography sessions, public ghost hunts and private investigations rather than everyday walk-in access.
Fairport Harbor, OH
The 1871 Fairport Harbor lighthouse and keeper's house now operate as a seasonal marine museum, but their strangest resident is said to be a ghostly gray cat seen darting through the former living quarters. During renovation work, a mummified gray cat was found in a crawl space and is now part of the museum's story; the museum and tower are seasonal.
Farrar, IA
The 1920s Farrar school building is privately operated as a paranormal investigation destination, with scheduled tours and overnight access. OddWay visitors should book through the operator rather than treating the building as abandoned.
Columbus, OH
The former 13th Floor Haunted House in Columbus now operates under local ownership as Fear Columbus Haunted House. It remains a large seasonal horror attraction with elaborate walk-through sets, live actors and additional special-event nights, but the OddWay record should be renamed and pointed to the current brand.
Virginia Beach, VA
The current Federal-style house dates to about 1830 on a property whose history reaches back to a 17th-century ferry and an earlier courthouse site near the famous Grace Sherwood witch trial. It operates as a historic house museum on limited weekly tour hours and has also become well known locally for reported paranormal activity.
Staatsburg, NY
A local fiddler was reportedly robbed and murdered on a bridge here in September 1808. The bridge is gone, but folklore says his music can still be heard on moonlit nights, and a roadside Legends & Lore marker identifies the site.
