This enormous sassafras at Frederica Street and Maple Avenue has a trunk circumference of roughly 21 feet and is believed to be several centuries old. Local lore says homeowner Grace Rash once confronted road crews with a shotgun to prevent the tree from being cut down during a highway-widening project.
