The Athens Lunatic Asylum opened in 1874 and eventually became the enormous complex now called The Ridges, which Ohio University acquired after the hospital era ended. The grounds and trails are public and parts of the complex now house university facilities and the Kennedy Museum, while abandoned or restricted buildings are off-limits; the site's institutional history has made it one of Athens' best-known paranormal locations.
