Each late spring, Photinus carolinus fireflies in the Elkmont area flash in coordinated waves, creating one of the Smokies' strangest natural spectacles. The National Park Service controls peak-event access through a lottery and timed-entry system, so this is a seasonal, permit-dependent stop rather than a casual nighttime pull-off.
