Built beginning in 1912 as a lavish marble estate for James and Sallie Dooley, Swannanoa resembles a European palace unexpectedly planted atop Virginia's Blue Ridge. The property is privately owned and is not a normal daily attraction, but occasional scheduled tours and open-house dates have allowed public access; do not enter outside an advertised event.
