The South Bass Island Lighthouse was completed in 1897, and tragedy arrived almost immediately when assistant keeper Harry Anderson died during the island's 1898 smallpox outbreak. The lighthouse later developed stories of unexplained activity connected to its keepers; the grounds can be viewed publicly, while interior and tower access is limited to scheduled open houses or tours.
