In 1772, New Hampshire mill owners resisted royal officials attempting to enforce laws reserving the colony's largest white pines for the British Crown. The confrontation became known as the Pine Tree Riot and is often remembered as an early act of resistance preceding the American Revolution. A marker and millstone identify the historic tavern site.
