Edgar Allan Poe died on October 7, 1849 at what was then Washington College Hospital after being found delirious several days earlier, and the circumstances of his final days remain disputed. The original hospital is gone, but a plaque on the later hospital complex marks the location traditionally associated with the room where Poe died.
