Stories of a monster in Silver Lake became so popular that a local hotel owner built a mechanical sea serpent in 1855 and secretly launched it into the water to attract tourists. The hoax was eventually exposed, but the Silver Lake serpent survived as local folklore and now has its own Legends & Lore marker.
