The Cockermouth River has carved deep potholes, bowls and smooth twisting channels into the bedrock here over thousands of years. The shapes look almost intentionally sculpted, which gives the gorge its name. The state natural area is generally open for recreation, though conditions can become hazardous around high water and ice.
