The Schoellkopf complex was once the world's largest hydroelectric power station before a catastrophic rockslide and collapse destroyed most of it in 1956. A seasonal elevator at Niagara Falls State Park now carries visitors into the gorge, where surviving walls and industrial remnants can be seen along the official ruins trail.
