Poet Sarah Helen Whitman lived at 88 Benefit Street and became briefly engaged to Edgar Allan Poe in 1848. Their intense and unsuccessful courtship is one of Providence's strongest direct links to Poe. The building is a private residence, so it should be viewed only from the public sidewalk.
