Built in 1949 as a temporary Christmas-season publicity stunt, the 88.5-foot neon star on Mill Mountain proved so popular that it became permanent. It remains the world's largest freestanding illuminated man-made star and overlooks Roanoke from a public park and scenic viewpoint.
