H.H. Richardson designed this monumental complex as the Buffalo State Asylum for the Insane, with Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux shaping the grounds around it. The grounds remain accessible and scheduled seasonal tours enter portions of the restored complex, while other former hospital buildings are not open for exploration.
