This granite public drinking fountain was erected in 1929 by the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union to commemorate the Delaware organization’s fiftieth anniversary. Temperance fountains were meant to provide readily available water as an alternative to alcoholic drinks, leaving an unusual piece of Prohibition-era social history directly beside the beach.
