The 1964 Good Friday earthquake dropped the Portage area several feet, allowing salt water to kill forests and force the community's abandonment. Bleached ghost trees and remnants can be seen from lawful roadside areas; the tidal, boggy former townsite should not be treated as free-roam terrain.
