A stone tower beside the Charles River marks the place nineteenth-century scholar Eben Horsford believed was a Norse fort connected to the legendary city of Norumbega. His Viking theory was not supported by convincing archaeological evidence, leaving the monument as an impressive memorial to a historical idea that did not hold up.
