A small memorial recalls Betty, an elephant traveling with a nineteenth-century menagerie who was shot and killed in Chepachet in 1826. Accounts say a local man fired after becoming angry when the elephant would not respond to him. The understated roadside marker preserves one of Rhode Island's strangest and saddest animal stories.
