In 1958, a U.S. Air Force B-47 accidentally dropped a nuclear weapon near Mars Bluff. The nuclear capsule was not inside the bomb, but its conventional explosives detonated and blasted a crater roughly 50 to 70 feet across while injuring members of the Gregg family.
