For generations the area was famous for mysterious subterranean booms and rumblings remembered in Indigenous traditions and later colonial folklore. Geologists eventually linked the 'Moodus Noises' to shallow microearthquakes, giving the park a rare combination of genuine geology and centuries of strange stories.
