A memorial lamp and plaque mark the site where inventor David Melville demonstrated an early gas streetlight in Newport during the first years of the nineteenth century. Melville's work predates the better-known municipal gas-lighting systems that followed elsewhere in the United States. The small marker is easy to miss on Pelham Street.
