The former Kings Park Psychiatric Center grew into a sprawling institutional campus that held more than 9,000 patients at its peak before closing in 1996. Much of the property is now Nissequogue River State Park, where public roads and trails pass surviving hospital buildings; the abandoned structures themselves are unsafe and off-limits, so do not enter them.
