Abolitionist sea captain Jonathan Walker was branded on his right hand with the letters "SS" for "slave stealer" after attempting to help seven enslaved people escape from Florida in 1844. His monument stands just inside Evergreen Cemetery and prominently reproduces the branded hand that became a symbol of the antislavery movement.
