Pithole exploded into a booming oil town after nearby wells struck petroleum in 1865 and collapsed almost as quickly when the boom moved elsewhere. Little of the original city remains above ground, but paths, foundations, interpretation and a seasonal visitor center preserve one of Pennsylvania's most dramatic ghost towns.
