Homestake Mining Company built this elaborate opera house in 1914 for the community surrounding its enormous gold mine. A catastrophic fire gutted much of the interior in 1984, and the ongoing restoration leaves visitors with an unusual mix of grand architecture, ruins and functioning performance space.
