A Staten Island legend tells of a Hessian drummer named Ernest and a young Van Pelt girl called Pretty who became friends in 1776 and died the same year. Stories claim drumbeats, footsteps and the girl's apparition can still be encountered around the historic house, and a Legends & Lore marker records the tale at Historic Richmond Town.
