The preserved head of Fred, a New Bern fire horse who served the city in the early 1900s, is displayed at the New Bern Firemen’s Museum. According to museum history, Fred died while still harnessed after responding to what turned out to be a false alarm. Museum: https://newbernfiremuseum.com/
