These massive Brule clay and sandstone formations were major landmarks for emigrants on the Oregon, California and Mormon trails. Their castle-like shapes inspired names such as Court House, Jail House and Solitary Tower. Public access allows travelers to see the same skyline repeatedly described in nineteenth-century journals.
