A city historical marker records the November 1974 incident in which teenagers reported a glowing object flying low over Carbondale and crashing into a silt pond near Russell Park. Crowds and investigators descended on the site before a lantern was eventually recovered from the water, but the case remains a major piece of local UFO folklore and now inspires the annual Carbondalien Festival.
