On January 7, 1948, Kentucky Air National Guard pilot Thomas Mantell died after climbing while pursuing an unidentified object reported over Kentucky. The incident became an early landmark of the modern UFO era; later investigations have commonly connected the object to a high-altitude balloon and Mantell's crash to hypoxia, while a Kentucky marker preserves the mystery.
