Engineer Claudius Crozet's 4,273-foot railroad tunnel opened in 1858 after nearly nine years of difficult construction through the Blue Ridge Mountains. The abandoned bore reopened as a pedestrian and bicycle trail in 2020, but it is completely dark inside and the walk to and through it requires a flashlight and appropriate trail access.
