A towering metal statue of nineteenth-century Catholic missionary Bishop Frederic Baraga stands above the wooded hillside near L'Anse. The roughly 35-foot monument shows Baraga holding a cross and snowshoes, referencing the long winter journeys that earned him the nickname "Snowshoe Priest."
