The Avrocar was a real Cold War attempt to build a disc-shaped vertical-takeoff aircraft that looked remarkably like the flying saucers dominating UFO culture at the time. One surviving example is displayed inside the National Museum of the United States Air Force, where admission is free during museum hours.
