Between roughly A.D. 1000 and 1450, Mississippian people built a major town here containing large earthen platform mounds, plazas and houses. The preserved archaeological site and museum allow visitors to encounter the landscape without treating the Indigenous city as a mysterious or vanished-civilization legend.
