Construction work in 2003 uncovered human remains beneath Chestnut Street, revealing a forgotten eighteenth-century African burial ground. Archaeological work identified multiple individuals of African descent, and the city later created a public memorial park over the site. It is a solemn burial and remembrance space and should be treated accordingly.
