Waveland, MS
A museum in one of the Mississippi communities hit hardest by Hurricane Katrina, preserving photographs, personal accounts, artifacts and recovery stories. Its hurricane simulator and Katrina recovery collections make it both memorial and disaster-history museum.
Port Gibson, MS
Four prehistoric mounds sit roughly half a mile north of the better-known Windsor Ruins, showing that this landscape was significant long before the plantation era. At least one mound is visible from the public road; do not enter private land.
Port Gibson, MS
Twenty-three enormous Corinthian columns are nearly all that remain of Windsor, an antebellum mansion destroyed by fire in 1890. The freestanding columns look more like an abandoned classical temple than a former Mississippi house and are one of the state's strongest ruin stops.
Greenville, MS
A major Mississippian ceremonial center with a museum and a group of large platform mounds, including one of the tallest in the region. It is a public MDAH site and one of Mississippi's strongest archaeological road-trip stops.
