Whitesville, WV
This public memorial honors the 29 miners killed in the Upper Big Branch Mine disaster on April 5, 2010. Dedicated in 2012, its long granite wall includes life-size silhouettes and the names of the victims, with parking and year-round public access.
Walker, WV
Volcano exploded into existence during the 1860s West Virginia oil boom and was largely destroyed by fire in 1879. Scattered industrial and community remains survive in the woods near Mountwood Park, but reaching them requires a moderately challenging hike rather than a roadside stop.
Whipple, WV
Built in the 1890s, this unusual coal-company store once served the surrounding mining community and later operated as a museum interpreting company-town life. The museum closed and the building was sold to a private owner in 2018, so OddWay travelers should only view the exterior from the public road unless a new authorized access program is announced.
