One of the most important Mississippian ceremonial centers west of the Mississippi River survives here as protected earthworks and archaeological landscape. The museum and trails interpret a complex Indigenous community; mounds and cultural resources must not be climbed, collected from or disturbed.
Weatherford, OK
Named for astronaut Thomas P. Stafford, this museum holds aircraft, rocket engines, spacecraft-related hardware and thousands of aviation artifacts. Full-scale machines and spaceflight objects make it substantially more tactile than a general science museum.
Ponca City, OK
This public park and museum honor Ponca Chief Standing Bear, whose 1879 federal court case affirmed that Native Americans were persons entitled to seek habeas corpus protection. A large statue and interpretive spaces make the site both a legal-history landmark and a major Indigenous cultural stop.
Wakita, OK
Wakita served as a major filming location for the 1996 movie Twister, and this small museum preserves props, photographs and production memorabilia. The town itself still carries visual traces of its role in the tornado film.
Cheyenne, OK
The National Park Service interprets the 1868 attack by Lt. Col. George A. Custer's forces on a Southern Cheyenne village led by Peace Chief Black Kettle. Begin at the visitor center and follow designated trails to approach the landscape with appropriate historical and cultural context.
