A remote trail leads to one of the highest concentrations of petrified wood in the United States, including large fossilized stumps from a swampy Paleocene landscape. NPS changed the legal driving approach in 2026; follow the current approved route and never remove fossil wood or stone.
Bowman, ND
This regional museum is unusually strong in paleontology as well as local history, with fossils gathered from southwestern North Dakota and an active research tradition. It connects ranch-country history with the much older animals buried beneath it.
Rugby, ND
A collection of historic buildings and artifacts recreates everyday life from the surrounding prairie communities. It complements Rugby's giant monuments with a denser, more local version of roadside history.
Fargo, ND
A small museum devoted to baseball star Roger Maris sits unexpectedly inside West Acres shopping mall. Memorabilia, video and recreated elements turn a retail corridor into a compact sports shrine.
Pekin, ND
Historic buildings gathered into a village preserve churches, homes, a school and other pieces of rural North Dakota life. The clustered structures make the site resemble an intentionally assembled ghost town on the prairie.
Dickinson, ND
Dickinson State University's Roosevelt Center is building a vast digital archive of Theodore Roosevelt material and interprets his life through documents, early motion pictures and historic audio. Hearing and seeing a nineteenth-century president through surviving technology gives the collection an unusual media-history angle.
Rugby, ND
Historic clothing and accessories are displayed in a museum devoted specifically to Victorian-era dress. The narrow focus makes it one of the state's more unusual specialty collections.
