This Scranton museum is devoted to escape artist and magician Harry Houdini, with memorabilia, photographs, props and material examining his career and his campaigns against fraudulent spiritualists. This restored 18th-century apothecary interprets medicine from an era when treatments included bloodletting, leeches, lancets, snakeroot and other remedies that look alarming by modern standards. Costumed interpretation and demonstrations make the small museum much stranger than a conventional colonial house tour.

Indianapolis, IN
The museum occupies the 1896 Old Pathology Building of the former Central State Hospital, the oldest surviving pathology facility in the United States. Guided tours retain original laboratories, an autopsy room and an anatomical museum containing preserved specimens, while the remaining former hospital buildings and tunnels elsewhere on the property are posted no-trespassing.
Wall Township, NJ
The former Camp Evans military research complex now contains more than 20 museums and exhibits devoted to radio, radar, computing, military technology, spaceflight and other scientific history. The site preserves buildings tied to early wireless communication and World War II radar research.
De Smet, SD
The homestead associated with the Ingalls family preserves the prairie setting made famous through Laura Ingalls Wilder's writing. Reconstructed buildings and hands-on activities allow visitors to experience the exposed landscape that shaped several of her books.
Toms River, NJ
New Jersey's "Bugseum" is devoted entirely to insects and other arthropods, with live specimens, preserved collections and interactive displays. Scheduled touch presentations give visitors a chance to meet some of the museum's stranger living residents.

Peru, IN
The museum occupies part of the former Wallace Circus winter quarters, a site that helped make Peru one of America's most important circus towns. Historic wagons, circus buildings, memorabilia and performers' history survive on the property, which is designated a National Historic Landmark.
Baraboo, WI
This museum preserves costumes, props, portraits, tiny cars and archival material from notable clowns and circus performers. Located in circus-heavy Baraboo, it gives OddWay a concentrated collection devoted to one of entertainment history's strangest professions.
Estes Park, CO
A small museum at the Stanley interprets cryonics and the preservation of Bredo Morstoel, the man behind Nederland's Frozen Dead Guy lore. The exhibit focuses on cryogenic preservation history; access is through the hotel's scheduled tour program.
