Wilson Bentley became the first person to successfully photograph a single snow crystal in 1885 and went on to create thousands of images. The Old Red Mill preserves his equipment, photographs and story in the Vermont community where his fascination with snow began.

A museum devoted to the Hellcats armored division, with uniforms, vehicles, weapons and battlefield history from World War II.

Superior, WI
A former church houses hundreds of accordions and related free-reed instruments from many countries and eras. The sheer density of ornate, mechanical instruments makes the museum both a music archive and an unusually specific visual collection.
St. Martinville, LA
The Acadian Memorial commemorates Acadian refugees who arrived in Louisiana after deportation from Canada and includes a mural, genealogical resources and memorial installations. It stands beside the Evangeline Oak but is a distinct museum and remembrance site.
Goshen, CT
Beyond the live-animal park, Action Wildlife maintains a museum filled with mounted animals and natural-history displays. The unusual concentration of taxidermy makes it a distinct stop within the larger wildlife property; current park admission includes museum access.
Dover, DE
A free aviation museum housed in a restored World War II hangar that was once used for secret rocket development. More than 35 aircraft and unusual airlift artifacts fill the hangar and outdoor airpark, with some aircraft opened for visitor access on selected days.
Hampton, VA
This free city park displays aircraft, rockets, missiles and space hardware outdoors in a landscape tied closely to Hampton's aerospace history. The outdoor collection is accessible daily during park hours, while the indoor museum adds exhibits on aviation and space exploration.
Portage, MI
The Air Zoo mixes more than a hundred aircraft and space artifacts with flight simulators and indoor amusement-style rides. Highlights include rare military aircraft and an SR-71B Blackbird, creating an unusually theatrical aviation museum rather than a quiet hangar display.
Ajo, AZ
Housed in the historic St. Catherine's Indian Mission building, the museum preserves mining, community and desert history from Ajo. Its collections give context to the huge open pit visible just outside town.
Birmingham, AL
UAB’s medical museum preserves historic surgical tools, diagnostic devices, an iron lung and other objects documenting how medicine changed over time. The collection is displayed in the Pappas Historical Collections Gallery inside Lister Hill Library.
Homer, AK
The federal visitor center interprets the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge, seabird colonies and the remote islands stretching far into the Aleutians. Exhibits turn places most travelers can never physically reach into a concentrated natural-history stop.
Anchorage, AK
Dinosaurs, Ice Age mammals, minerals and Alaska geology share space in a small science museum. Fossils and large skeletons give Anchorage an unexpectedly prehistoric stop far from the state's more familiar Gold Rush museums.

The state museum holds major collections on Alaska Native cultures, Russian America, mining, maritime history and territorial life. It is one of the best single places to understand the unusual objects and stories scattered across the rest of an Alaska OddWay route.
Tucson, AZ
This University of Arizona museum fills galleries with meteorites, fluorescent minerals, gemstones and spectacular mineral specimens. Tucson's global gem-show culture makes the concentrated geology collection especially fitting.
Allegan, MI
Built in 1906, this former county jail and sheriff's residence remained in use until 1963 and now houses the Allegan County Historical Society's museum collection. Visitors can see original jail spaces alongside thousands of local artifacts, photographs and historical displays.
Brevard, NC
ATOM is a seasonal pop-up museum devoted to vintage aluminum Christmas trees and the strange color wheels, ornaments, and decorations that accompanied them. The deliberately kitschy collection appears at the Transylvania Heritage Museum around the holiday season rather than operating year-round. A natural-history museum and raptor center focuses on Alaska's birds and wildlife, with live educational ambassadors and taxidermy displays. Haines sits beside one of the world's best-known seasonal bald-eagle concentrations, giving the collection a strong local reason to exist.

Hundreds of ornate banjos trace the instrument from minstrel-era history through jazz, bluegrass and modern performance. Elaborately decorated instruments and a highly specific collecting focus make the museum an unusually strong niche stop.
Quicksburg, VA
A warehouse beside Shenandoah Caverns is packed with enormous retired parade floats from presidential inaugurations, Rose Parades and other major celebrations. Visitors walk among giant genies, animals, patriotic displays and repurposed float pieces on seasonal guided tours, generally from Memorial Day through Labor Day with selected additional dates.
Laconia, NH
Hidden inside Funspot is a museum devoted to the golden age of coin-operated video games. Roughly 180 classic machines from the 1970s and 1980s are displayed at a time, with additional games rotated from storage. The combination of museum preservation and functioning arcade floor makes it far more interactive than a typical technology exhibit.
Bristol, CT
Hundreds of American clocks and watches trace Connecticut's outsized role in mass-produced timekeeping. Rooms filled with ticking mechanisms, novelty clocks and elaborate cases make this specialized museum much stranger than its quiet historic-house exterior suggests.
