Designed by Richard Morris Hunt and completed in 1894, Belcourt is one of Newport's strangest Gilded Age mansions, combining French Gothic and Renaissance influences around enormous carriage spaces. Later owners promoted stories of haunted antiques and unexplained phenomena inside the house. Visits are through scheduled tours and events.
Coventry, RI
The 1770 homestead of Revolutionary War General Nathanael Greene preserves period rooms and artifacts connected to one of Rhode Island's most important military figures. Visitors and paranormal groups have also reported footsteps, voices and other unexplained experiences in and around the house, though these remain folklore rather than verified phenomena. Tours operate on a limited schedule.
Cranston, RI
This nineteenth-century mansion was home to industrialist and Civil War-era Rhode Island governor William Sprague. Its long history, family tragedies and preserved interiors have produced decades of local ghost stories and reported paranormal encounters. The Cranston Historical Society opens the property for tours and special events rather than daily visitation.
Middletown, RI
This Gothic Revival mansion, later known through its use as an inn, has been associated with stories of apparitions and unexplained activity. Its architecture alone gives the property a distinctly haunted-house silhouette, complete with steep gables and elaborate nineteenth-century detailing. It currently operates as lodging, so access should be limited to guests or authorized visits.
Lincoln, RI
Built around 1810, Hearthside is a preserved Federal-style mansion filled with period rooms, historic objects and local stories. The house has also developed a reputation for reported footsteps, apparitions and unexplained activity during its long history. Access is through scheduled museum openings, tours and events.
New Shoreham, RI
This historic Block Island cemetery is traditionally associated with survivors and victims connected to the 1738 wreck of the Princess Augusta, remembered in folklore as the Palatine. The disaster later inspired stories of the Palatine Light, a flaming ghost ship said to appear offshore around the anniversary season. West Greenwich, RI
Nellie Vaughn died in 1889, but her grave later became surrounded by stories describing her as a witch, vampire or restless ghost. Investigations of the legend show that many of the supernatural claims appeared long after her death, making the site as much a lesson in how folklore evolves as a haunted stop. Providence, RI
Opened in 1922, the former Providence Biltmore has accumulated decades of stories involving unexplained voices, apparitions and other alleged paranormal activity. Its history also includes Prohibition-era nightlife and a long list of prominent guests. The building remains an operating downtown hotel, now known as Graduate Providence.
Harrisville, RI
The Arnold Estate farmhouse became internationally famous through claims investigated by Ed and Lorraine Warren and later dramatized in The Conjuring. The property has changed ownership and is undergoing restoration; the current operator states that it is private and plans to resume tours after restoration is complete. Do not enter the property unless an authorized visit is announced.
Providence, RI
Located inside the historic Arcade, Weird Providence is the home of Lovecraft Arts & Sciences and specializes in weird fiction, cosmic horror, occult material and Providence's H.P. Lovecraft legacy. The nonprofit also supports NecronomiCon Providence and maintains information about unusual sites around the city.
Newport, RI
Operating in a building dating to the seventeenth century, the White Horse Tavern is among America's oldest surviving taverns. The restaurant has accumulated ghost stories involving colonial-era figures and unexplained activity, although these claims remain folklore rather than verified events. It remains an active restaurant rather than a dedicated paranormal attraction.
